Despite an oustanding effort by its goalie and its entire lineup, Rochester John Marshall/Lourdes had its season end in heartbreaking fashion in the Section One, Class AA girls hockey quarterfinals once again.
Lakeville North's Morgan Manes scored 3:51 into the second overtime to give No. 4-seeded North a dramatic 4-3 victory against the No. 5 Rockets on Wednesday.
"Our girls played their hearts out," JM/L coach Bob Montrose said. "Rebecca Freiburger played a great game and Melissa Zinser was outstanding in goal for us."

"I think we're the underdog, but we have a strong chance to win," Montrose said. "They like to pack it in, and they don't give you many clean looks at the net. That's kind of what they've always done. They play on that Olympic sheet, and they're good at it, keeping things in tight and not allowing chances."
Montrose anticipates a low-scoring battle.

John Marshall/Lourdes is another team playing its best hockey at the end of the season. The Rockets closed the regular season with six consecutive wins; they won eight of their final nine games, including a blowout win over a ranked Red Wing squad.

Section 1AA Girls Hockey starts Wednesday
Congrats to seniors Emma Christensen, Allison Dee, Melissa Zinser, and Rebecca Freiburger post a 49-2-1 conference record their final 3 seasons.

JM/L has finished 49-2-1 in the Big Nine over the last three years.
"These girls should feel proud of their efforts this season and over the past three years, said JM/L coach Bob Montrose. "It takes a big effort to be prepared game after game and ride the wave of ups and downs over the season. And to do it for a span of three years and over 50 games is incredible. I am not sure when we have seen a hockey team win their conference championship the way these girls have done it."
Sarah Montrose and Renee Satlness led the way for the Rockets against Austin. Each had a goal and two assists. Three other JM/L players had one goal apiece.

For almost as long as the JM senior can remember, this arena has been her second home.
"It's kind of crazy to think that it might be my last game there," she said. "It's crazy to think that it's almost over."
It's the final regular-season game and JML can clinch a share of a third-straight Big Nine Conference title with a win, yet the Rockets will likely open the playoffs on the road next week.

Rochester John Marshall/Lourdes played one of its best games of the season Saturday in beating non-conference foe Bloomington Jefferson in girls hockey.
JM/Lourdes got goals from Ashley Koehler, Rebecca Freiburger and Emily Bowron. Bowron scored last, off an assist from Renee Saltness, just 54 seconds into the third period. It stood up as the game winner

Rebecca Freiburger had three goals and Renee Saltness one. Brooklyn Birdseye, Emma Christensen and Saltness each had two assists.
Rockets goalie Clare Brunn had 16 saves, including several outstanding ones, according to coach Bob Montrose.
JM/Lourdes is 14-2 in the Big Nine and 14-9 overall. Albert Lea is 2-13-1, 3-18-2.

The stakes were high on Tuesday when Owatonna came to the Recreation Center to take on the John Marshall/Lourdes girls hockey team. The winner would move into first place in the Big Nine, and after two periods the Rockets trailed 2-1.
But the Rockets came out firing on all cylinders in the third period, scoring three unanswered goals to claim a huge 4-2 win.
Renee Saltness and Rebecca Freiburger were an unstoppable tandem, with each figuring in all four JM/L tallies. Saltness had two goals and two assists, while Rebecca Freiburger had a goal and three assists as the Rockets improved to 13-2 in conference play, and 13-9 overall. Emily Bowron had the other goal for JM/L.

#20 Taylor Hodenfeld celebrates 1 of 2 goals against Winona

The Rockets put on a shooting clinic according to head coach Bob Montrose, firing 60 shots on Winona goaltender Autumn Vaith. JM/L has scored 17 goals in its last two games.
Taylor Hodenfield and Theresa Peterson scored their first high school goals and nine other players picked up points for JML. Clare Brunn stopped seven shots for the win.
"This was a good chance to get a lot of players active and the girls who might not see a lot of ice time played very well against Winona," Montrose said. "We are focused on playing smart team hockey and our girls did a great job moving the puck and keeping everyone involved."

The game didn't start out easy for the Rockets, though. The teams went into the second period tied 0-0. But after that, Freiburger took over. The senior forward finished the game with five goals and one assist.
"Rebecca Freiburger is a top-notch competitor and she made a point to carry us tonight and we needed that," JML coach Bob Montrose said.
JM/Lourdes scored three goals in the second period, then tacked on six more in the third.
The JML Rockets wore green laces Thursday for the Shannon O'Hara Foundation night.

St. Paul United scored twice in the first eight minutes, but the Rockets bounced back after the rough start and played well for the final two periods.
Ally Halverson scored in the second period for the lone JM/Lourdes goal. Brooklyn Birdseye and Rebecca Freiburger earned the assists.
Clare Brunn played well but suffered the loss in goal for the Rockets. Brunn finished with 26 saves on 30 shots.

Rochester John Marshall/Lourdes showed off its depth and skill Thursday against the No. 9-ranked team in Class A girls hockey.
The Rockets scored three times in each of the first two periods and never trailed en route to a decisive 8-1 victory against Red Wing at Graham Arena IV. The victory moves JM/Lourdes into first place in the Big Nine Conference.
"This was another big win for our girls," JM/L coach Bob Montrose said. "It was a four-point win (in the standings) against a tough team. We have put together a very solid effort in our past two games and our girls are excited to keep this going."

Renee Saltness, Rebecca Freiburger and Emily Bowron scored two goals each for the John Marshall-Lourdes girls hockey squad, but the offensive star of the night was Katie Montrose, who had five assists as the Rockets claimed a 7-1 road win over Mankato East.
"This was a very impressive game by our girls," said JML head coach Bob Montrose, adding that it was "our most most complete game of the season, a real turning point."

"Our team was concerned that scoring might be an issue early on," JM/Lourdes coach Bob Montrose said. "The Rockets scored early and often against Prior Lake, but defending proved to be the challenge."
Brooke Hansen scored three times for the Rockets and led them to a 4-0 lead. But Prior Lake then scored six times in an 11-minute span.

The Rockets and the Falcons are the top two teams in the Big Nine. JM/Lourdes slipped to 8-2 in the conference and 8-7 overall. Faribault is 11-1 in Big Nine play.
JM/Lourdes got its only goal in the third period. That's when Rebecca Freiburger connected, off an assist from Lindsey Angst. Rockets goalie Sophie Hyke had a big game, stopping 27 of 29 shots.

The John Marshall/Lourdes girls hockey team hadn't lost a Big Nine conference game in nearly three years, a winning streak that stood at 44 games as the Rockets visited Northfield on Thursday.
All good things must come to an end, and in this case, Northfield's Kate Bornhauser scored with less than a minute to play, giving the Raiders a 1-0 win and snapping the Rockets' Big Nine streak.

"We had a very big task at hand tonight with Wayzata who is undefeated and had given up just one total goal in five games leading up to this game," JM/Lourdes coach Bob Montrose said. "We gave up some early goals that we could have prevented, but rebounded to battle and play two very competitive periods. Renee Saltness scored four goals and Rochester John Marshall/Lourdes rolled to a 6-1 Big Nine Conference girls hockey win over Century on Saturday afternoon.
Saltness, a junior forward, also added an assist. Rebecca Freiburger had a three-point game with a goal and two assists and Brooke Hansen also scored for the Rockets.
Sarah Montrose added three assists. JM/Lourdes outshot Century 37-11.

"This game was filled with the typical crosstown emotion and Mayo played a high-spirited game," JM/Lourdes coach Bob Montrose said. "Mayo has quite a few high-end players and a very good goalie. They will be a team to look out for this season. We are younger this year and that showed. Once we get a few games under us we will turn the corner. Ashley Koehler played great and it was nice to see her get the biggest prize of the day with the OT game-winning goal."
