The John Marshall softball team started their season in fine fashion on Friday, erupting for seven runs in the second inning and cruising to a 13-3 win over Pine Island.

Gina Paula ended the game with a flourish, hitting a walkoff two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to close out the game by the 10-run rule. Sammy Guetter had a single and a double and picked up three RBIs, and Gabby Dokken added a single and a triple and scored twice.

Abby Miles tossed a complete game to get the win, scattering five hits and three walks while notching seven strikeouts.

JM head coach Thang Nguyen saw a lot to like from his team. "We played well tonight and hit the ball hard up and down our lineup," he said. "Our baserunning was aggressive and very good."

This was Nguyen's 200th career win as JM's head coach.

JM is at Century on Monday.
