The John Marshall softball team wasn't scheduled to play a doubleheader against defending state champion Faribault on Friday, but it turned into the equivalent of that and more as the Rockets and Falcons waged an extra-inning battle that lasted 15 innings.

In the top of the 15th, Faribault's Abby Van Ryn led off with a solo homer. The Falcons added one more run and ultimately claimed a 3-1 win.

Amazingly, both starting pitchers went the distance, throwing a combined total of nearly 400 pitches. JM's Abby Miles took the hard-luck loss, scattering 11 hits over 15 innings while picking up 12 strikeouts. Faribault's McKayla Armbruster gave up just seven hits and zero walks while piling up 33 strikeouts.

"You always hate to lose, but I couldn't be prouder of our team and how they battled tonight," said JM coach Thang Nguyen. "We knew runs would be at a premium against Armbruster, but we fought our tails off all night. Abby and our defense left everything they had on the field. That's all you can ever ask of them."

Claire Evans accounted for JM's only run with a solo homer in the third inning that tied the game at 1-1.

JM is now 5-3 overall, 2-2 in the Big Nine. Faribault remains unbeaten on the season at 8-0.

JM was due to play in the Lourdes tournament this weekend, but that tournament has been cancelled. The Rockets will travel to Albert Lea on Monday to make up a game postponed from last week.
