WINONA — John Marshall rallied to post a 5-3 win in nine innings over Winona in Big Nine Conference softball on Thursday.

Winona, the defending Section 1AAA champion, took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first before JM pitcher Abby Miles blanked the Winhawks over the next eight innings.

The Rockets scored twice in the sixth on an RBI single by Grace Freed and a throwing error. JM proceeded to tie the game in the sixth on Gabby Dokken's squeeze bunt.

JM then scored twice in the ninth when Freed singled and scored on Olivia Evans' two-out RBI single and Miles followed with a double to drive in an insurance run.

"It was a great win by our team tonight," JM coach Thang Nguyen said. "After falling behind early, the girls made some great adjustments and battled their way to a victory. Couldn't be prouder of how we played for nine innings against a very good Winona team."

JM improves to 10-3, 5-2 in the Big Nine. Winona falls to 12-4, 5-3 in the Big Nine. Rockets play at Pine Island on Friday then travel to Austin for a doubleheader on Saturday.
