Rochester John Marshall High School Athletics

AUSTIN – Rochester John Marshall’s bats were hot from the start on Saturday and the Rockets swept a Big Nine Conference softball doubleheader at Austin. JM won the opener 11-4, then won Game 2 by a 5-3 score.

Ten players had at least one hit for JM in the first game, including home runs from Grace Freed, Gabby Dokken and Abby Miles.

Dokken and Freed had two hits and two RBIs each and combined to score five runs. Sammy Guetter added a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Abby Miles earned the pitching win, striking out four batters and walking just one.

"Both teams put bat to ball in the game, as Austin challenged our defense to make plays,” JM coach Thang Nguyen said. “We hit the ball hard, picked up some extra-base hits and were able to keep the pressure on throughout our lineup."

JM completed the sweep in Game 2, taking a 5-0 lead after five innings and holding off a late Austin rally.

The Rockets had chances to break the game open, but left the bases loaded in the fourth and fifth innings. In total they left 11 players on base.

Miles hit a solo home run and again earned the win by pitching a complete game.

Gina Pula and Melanie Sadecki each had a double and scored for the Rockets (6-2 Big Nine, 13-3 overall).

"We had a long but successful week, winning six games in five days,” Nguyen said. “We were happy to get out of Austin with two wins against a good-hitting team and look forward to another challenging week to finish the regular season."

JM plays against top-ranked Mankato West on Tuesday and third-ranked Northfield on Thursday.
