John Marshall hosted the Big 9 Conference's best softball team on Tuesday, and Mankato West lived up to its billing.

West jumped on the Rockets early and didn't let up en route to an 11-3 win.

"Give Mankato West all the credit tonight," said JM head coach Thang Ngyuen.  "They hit the ball hard and made all the plays in the field."

West scored one run in the first and two more in the second and had 16 hits in the game. The biggest blow was a 3-run homer by Kenzie Grunst in the top of the sixth inning.

The Rockets didn't help themselves on defense, as JM committed five errors that led to three unearned runs.

"We made a couple mistakes, and good teams take advantage of those mistakes," said Nguyen. "We will learn from this game and move on."

JM falls to 13-4 (6-3 Big 9) while Mankato West improves to 15-1 (10-0 Big 9), clinching at least a share of the conference title. The Rockets travel to Northfield on Thursday.
