AUSTIN — Second-seeded John Marshall won in the first round of the Section One, Class AAAA softball tournament on Thursday before falling in the second round.

The Rockets opened with a 3-1 win over No. 7 Lakeville South and then dropped a 5-2 contest to No. 3 Farmington. JM now falls into the loser-out portion of the double-elimination tournament.

Abby Miles tossed a three-hitter and struck out nine to defeat Lakeville South.

JM scoredall three of its runs in the first inning against the Cougars. Grace Freed tripled and scored on Sammy Guetter's RBI single. Guetter scored on a bases-loaded fielder's choice grounder and Ashley Koehler scored on a wild pitch.

Miles pitched for the Rockets again against Farmington and suffered the loss. Olivia Hazelbaker and Kaitlyn Mohr both hit home runs and drove in two runs as the Tigers jumped out to a 5-0 lead.

JM scored twice in the sixth when Miles hit a solo homer and Olivia Evans doubled and scored on Gabby Dokken's sacrifice fly. The Rockets had a couple of other scoring chances but had a runner thrown out at the plate in the 3rd and left the bases loaded in the fifth.

"Farmington played very well, hitting the ball hard and playing solid defense," JM coach Thang Nguyen said. "We couldn't match their hitting and came up a little short."

The Rockets (15-6) will take on Owatonna in an elimination game at 4 p.m. Friday with the winner advancing to next week's final four.
