AUSTIN — Top-seeded Lakeville North used the long ball to power its way past second-seeded Rochester John Marshall 9-2 in an elimination game in the Section One, Class AAAA softball tournament on Tuesday.

JM and Lakeville North were two of the final four teams left in the tournament along with New Prague and Farmington, who played in the winners bracket semifinal.

The Rockets struck first on Tuesday with a run in the first as Sam Guetter singled, stole second and scored on Abby Miles’s two-out single.

The lead held until Kaitlyn Young hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth.

Gina Pula cut the gap to 3-2 with a solo homer for JM in the the fifth.

But Lakeville sealed the victory in the bottom of the sixth as Faith Daehlin hit a grand slam and Alexis Haglund added a two-run homer.

“We were right there into the bottom of the fifth, but Lakeville delivered some big shots when they got runners on base and we couldn’t answer,” JM coach Thang Nguyen said.

Miles took the loss with another complete game. She pitched every inning for the Rockets this season.

John Marshall (16-7) graduates five seniors in Grace Freed, Gina Pula, Melanie Sadecki, Sam Guetter and Maggie Yadlosky.

“Our seniors provided outstanding leadership and the team was a pleasure to coach and compete with this season,” Nguyen said.
