AUSTIN — The Rochester John Marshall softball team faced a stiff test Thursday night, traveling to Austin to take on the Packers in the West Athletic Complex dome.

The Rockets got off to a fantastic start, scoring four times in the first two innings and then pulling away late for a 7-4 Big Nine Conference victory.

Abby Gee smashed her second home run of the season, blasting a two-run shot in the first inning.

The Packers scored twice in their half of the first. The Rockets came right back with two more in the second.

“We continued to get contributions from our whole team, both offensively and on defense,” JM coach Thang Nguyen said. “Gabby Dokken made a big catch on a line shot to right field, and we hit the ball hard every inning."

Emma Bartholomew got the pitching win for the Rockets. She tossed four innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits, while walking two and striking out five. Abby Miles pitched three scoreless innings to close the game. She allowed three hits and struck out four.

Lexy Andersen led JM at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Gina Pula was 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Grace Freed had two RBIs and a run scored. Melanie Sadecki smashed a double and scored a run, while Olivia Evans had two runs scored and an RBI.

Hannah McMasters paced Austin, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

"It was a nice win against an athletic Austin team that has been playing well this season,” said Nguyen.

JM improved to 4-0 overall and in the Big Nine. The Rockets return to action Monday at Northfield. Austin dropped to 5-3.
