Team Information 2019

Some parents have asked about practices, matches and playing positions.

Match:  Varsity consists of the top 6 players. I will go from last year's scores but also from any qualifying rounds we get in before and as the season progresses. Positions on the team ladder do change throughout the year. In a match we take the top four scores.
The JV team consists of the next 6 players on the ladder. Both varsity and JV will travel and play as indicated on the schedule below.
Special matches called INVITES are for varsity only. Players not traveling will meet with Coach Glandon to practice.
This year we have 25 guys out for the team so there will also be a B team. This group consists of the remaining players that are developing for the future.
There will be JV and B squad only matches on some Fridays during the season at Hadley Creek. Currently, the Rochester high schools have 3 matches set up. April 23, May 3 and May 10th.
Road trips mean getting out of school early. I like to get the guys out early enough so they have about an hour to warm up upon arriving at the course. For example, going to Winona we depart JM at 12:30, arrive at 1:30, the first group tees off at 2:30.
Typically, we all go off the first tee. This means the first group will almost be making the turn as the last group tees off. JM Golf will provide range balls at both home and away matches.
Dress code: Golf courses expect us to dress appropriately. Collared shirts, no jeans, gym shorts, or cargo shorts.
Dress in layers, it is always colder on the course.
Cell Phones Use: Not allowed to be used at matches or during practice.
Food: Most matches the parents take turns providing the players with a small sandwich, drink and snack at the turn. Typically, this means we will not stop for fast food on our way home. More time for homework.

Rules are very important for players to know. The guys you are playing with could try to talk you into a ruling in their favor. Remember to always play 2 balls and let the coaches figure out the rules at the end. More on rules later during practices.

Practice: With such a large group this year we will have to split up our group most of the time. Some JV and the B team could end up practicing at Hadley Creek with coach Glandon, while I take the varsity and some of the JV at Northern Hills.
Practices start at 3:30 at Northern Hills and 3:40 at Hadley Creek, the agenda will be given out on the this website on Sunday nights or by the coach upon arrival. Things change often.
You will need all of your clubs, balls, glove, tees and a Sharpie.
Dress for the weather, it gets cold out on the course. Layer up.
Typically, we practice until 5 or 5:30.
Those with last hour off will still need to attend practice at 3:30. This is a high school sport. Being  on the team isn't always just playing some golf after school. I want players that take being on this team seriously and really want to work on their game. Coach Glandon and I want players that accept coaching and are willing to put the time in to improve.
There are times I will get tee times and we will play 9 holes. Usually, these rounds are for qualifying or ladder matches. We keep score every time we play. On those nights practice could go long. We share Northern Hills with JM girls and Century girls. They want to get their kids out for the same reasons that I do. The course also needs to be open to the public. Therefore, it gets busy early in the year.
Practice during the season is usually at the range or practice greens at both sites. Practice time is to work on the variety of shots needed to score well. Example: Players can hit 100 chips in practice but possibly only 3 while playing 9 holes.
When we do play, all rules must be followed at all times. No gimmes, no do overs, re-tee if you hit out of bounds etc. This is cheating.
I will record scores and keep a running total so that I have information on team placement. Players must be honest with themselves. This is the foundation of the game of golf.
Cheating comes in many forms. It can be announcing to the group a lower score than actually made or not following the rules of golf. I have seen kids drop a spare ball if theirs is lost, or bumping the ball to improve the lie.
Scores are high early in the year, that's okay. It give players something to work towards. I usually take a players last 3 scores so one bad outing doesn't hurt a player the remainder of the year.
The team Code of Conduct will go over cheating and other team rules in detail. I will attach the code of conduct. Players and parents need to sign the form and return to me to play on the team. Please return the signature section at the PAC meeting.

Team pictures will be in early May. I will attach a pricing sheet as that time draws closer.
The end of year meeting will be in late May before school gets out.

I hope that covers some of the commonly asked questions. Please email me with any questions. dwmiller@rochester.k12.mn.us

Thanks,
Coach

New to the Team? Here is some Information.

I want the kids to enjoy their time on the golf team.

I want the kids to learn ways to improve their game.

The team is for students between grades 7-12.

Experience preferred but not mandatory. I will not cut.

Players must provide their own equipment.  Clubs--balls--clothing.

Players provide their own transportation to practice sites. Northern Hills or Hadley Creek Learning Center.
Some carpools do start up each year to help out the younger kids.

Players should dress for the cold and wind. It is a short season, we will play if the facility is open.

Players not traveling to matches will practice with our assistant coach, Mr. Glandon at either Northern Hills or Hadley Creek.

Practices are at either Northern Hills or Hadley Creek, Monday through Friday. Typically, from 3:30 to 5 or 5:30. Players must be at practice to play in matches.

Practices sessions are a time to sharpen skills with a variety drills. Some times we get to play a number of holes, some practices we work only on chipping or putting.

Varsity players will be gone about 10 afternoons and 4 full days.

Players should talk to their teachers and make arrangements in advance for missing class.

Our schedule is on Big9.org

I will use this website to update players and families every Sunday night of the season by 8pm. I will post practice and match details for the week along with who will go where on each day.

Uniforms: One of the captains will be organizing the purchase of a golf shirt with the team logo. We will try to keep the cost as low as we can but still maintain quality. We will use some of our team money to lower the price if possible.

Fundraiser: Every team does a fundraiser to gather funds for the items the school will not cover.
On the golf team, this can range from training aids to range balls to team events.
Over the years, I have heard form parents that by spring they want to be done with buying and trying to sell items.
Plus, most items from fundraisers, the team only gets 50% of the sales. Therefore, I am asking for a donation to the team of $50.00. I will go over all of this at the PAC meeting.
