LETTERING STANDARDS

To be eligible to earn a varsity letter in track and field you must participate in the program for the entire season and:

  • Be a good citizen and abide by the state high school league, district and team rules.

  • Complete the season with fewer than 2 unexcused absences.

  • Participate in all scheduled meets and team events unless excused by the coaches.

  • Participate in team service throughout the season (i.e. practice and meet preparation, storing equipment, clean up, tent set-up, fund raiser, promotion of the sport).

  • Have a recommendation from the coaching staff.

If meeting the above criteria, you can qualify in any one of the following ways:

  1. Place 8th in an individual event in the Big 9 Conference Meet or Section 1AA Meet.

  2. Place 5th or higher in a relay at the Big 9 Conference Meet or Section 1AA Meet.

  3. Equal or better one of the standards of performance in competition.

  4. Seniors and managers having completed two years of participation and are in good standing.

SECTION 1AA PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

  • The section qualifying standard is the three-year average eighth place finish in each individual event. (See standards for 2016 below).

  • The Section 1AA qualifying standard performance must be in an outdoor meet during the current season.

  • The Section 1AA qualifying standard performance must be met in a varsity meet involving 3 or more teams.

  • Junior Varsity performances will be accepted as meeting the section qualifying standard if the performance was achieved during junior varsity competition at a varsity meet with 3 or more teams.

  • If a question arises about a submitted qualifying performance, coaches must be able to provide the meet results that show the athlete, the performance, the meet date, the names of the competing schools, and the F.A.T. system used at the meet. (Generally, F.A.T. printouts have all of that information as part of the meet results report). Note that only fully automatic times (F.A.T) will be accepted for section qualifying standard performances. No hand held times will be accepted and no converted times will be allowed.

STATE HONOR ROLL STANDARDS

  •  The Minnesota State Track & Field Coaches Association has established performance standards to be listed on the Minnesota track and field honor roll.

MSHSL STATE TRACK MEET QUALIFYING STANDARDS

  • The Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) establishes the standards for qualifying for the state track and field championships. An athlete or relay team must finish in the top 2 in the sectional championships to qualify for state, OR they can qualify by meeting a time/distance standard set by the state.

  • This standard is designed to allow more than 2 athletes qualify from a section if they appear capable of finishing high at the state meet. They are computed by averaging the 5th place mark at the state meet for the past five years, so they are quite difficult to meet.
