Rochester John Marshall High School Athletics

Winona swept a doubleheader against John Marshall in Big Nine Conference softball on Thursday, winning the first game with ease and then holding on in the nightcap.

Winona's Ashton Hoeppner tossed a one-hit shutout over six innings as the Winhawks posted a 14-0 win in six innings the opener. Winona then outscored the Rockets 10-8 in the second game.

Megan Karp had the lone hit for the Rockets in the first game. Hoeppner struck out 12 and walked two.

Winona used a pair of big innings on offense. The Winhawks scored six runs in the top of the first and then close the game off with seven runs in the top of the seventh.

In the second game, Winona built a 5-0 lead and never trailed. The Winhawks had to hold on, however, as JM scored five times in the bottom of the seventh to cut the final margin to 10-8.

Gina Pula was 3-for-4 with a double, home runs and three RBIs for JM. Abby Gee and Addie Black were both 2-for-4. Pula hit a three-run homer in the five-run seventh.

"Winona has a good team, and they proved to be too much for us," JM coach Thang Nguyen said. "Big innings haunted us and it seemed like every inning the leadoff batter was on base. Offensively, we got better as the day went on but Ashton was able to limit our chances."

JM is now 6-10 overall, 2-7 in the Big Nine while Winona improves to 9-7, 5-2 in the Big Nine. The Rockets are at Eastview at 4:15 p.m. today.
